How Household List works

The shared grocery list, chore rotation and borrowed list for your household, on iPhone and Android. No sign-up, no ads, works offline.

Your household

Starting a household

Open the app, pick a display name and color, and tap Create a household. There’s no email or password.

Inviting the others

On the Household tab, share the invite link or the 6-character code however you like. The others install Household List and tap the link, or type the code under Join when they start.

Leaving or removing someone

Use Leave household on the Household tab. The person who created the household can also remove a member there.

Groceries

Adding and checking off

Type an item (with an optional quantity or note) and add it. Tap it when it’s in the cart: it moves to Recently bought, where one tap puts it back on the list. Everyone sees changes within a couple of seconds.

Suggestions and Running low

While you type, the app suggests your household’s usual items. After something has been bought 3 times, it learns how often you buy it and shows it under Running low when it’s due again.

Shopping one section at a time

Items are sorted into store sections (Produce, Dairy & eggs, Frozen and so on) as you add them. In the store, tap a section above the list to see only what you need there; All shows everything grouped by section. Long-press an item to move it to a different section; it stays there next time.

Repeating items

Open an item to make it come back on the list every week, 2 weeks, month, or a number of days after it was last bought.

In a store with no signal

Keep going: changes are saved on your phone and sync when you’re back online.

Chores

Setting up a chore

Give it a name, how often it repeats (daily, every few days, weekly on a chosen day like Tuesday, or monthly), and the order people take turns.

Done and Skip

Done marks it finished and passes it to the next person, with the next due date set. Skip passes the turn without marking it done.

Daily reminder

Turn on the reminder on the Household tab to get a notification for your own chores due that day.

Borrowed

Keeping track of loans

Add things you’ve lent out or borrowed, from tools and books to money: what it is, who has it, and an optional return date and note. Overdue items are highlighted.

Return reminders

If you set a return date, the person who added the item gets a reminder at 9 AM that day.

Marking returned

Anyone in the household can mark an item returned with one tap. Open the item to undo that or delete it.

Free and the household unlock

What’s free

A household of 2 people with up to 3 chores. The grocery list and borrowed list are included.

What the unlock adds

Up to 6 people and 50 chores. One person buys it and it’s unlocked for the whole household, whatever phone each person has. Choose yearly (a subscription that renews each year until you cancel) or lifetime (a one-time purchase). If a yearly unlock ends, the household goes back to the free limits: nothing is deleted, you just can’t add more people or chores until someone renews.

Managing or cancelling the yearly unlock

The person who subscribed can tap Manage subscription on the Household tab, or go to their App Store or Google Play subscriptions. Cancel at least 24 hours before it renews; the household stays unlocked until the end of the year already paid for. See the terms of use.

List sizes

Every household can have up to 100 items on the grocery list and 50 open borrowed items at once. The app remembers your 200 most recently bought groceries for suggestions and the 20 latest returned borrowed items; older ones are tidied away.

Your account and privacy

Moving to a new phone

Before switching, open the Household tab and tap Recovery code, save it with Save… (your password manager or notes that sync), and type its last 4 characters to check you saved it. The app reminds you until you do. On the new phone, choose to use a recovery code when you start and enter it to get back into your household.

What happens to an unused household

If nobody in a household opens the app for 12 months, it’s deleted with everything in it. With the lifetime unlock that’s 24 months, and it never happens while a yearly unlock is paid for. Opening the app once a year is enough to keep it.

Deleting your data

On the Household tab, tap Delete my data. Details are on the Delete your data page, and everything we store is listed in the privacy policy.
